Roulette Wheel

The roulette wheel is one of the centers of attention when playing roulette. The croupier (the dealer or the person that spins the wheel and drops the ball) will call no more bets and place the ball in the wheel. The ball will spin around and around as the wheel is spinning in the opposite direction of the ball making the famous sounds the roulette wheel possesses.

As the ball falls into the track and clicks on past a few of the numbers the excitement builds. The ball finally comes to a rest on one of the numbers and all the attention is now turned to the table, but enough about that, lets talk about the wheel some more.

European Roulette Wheel

European Roulette Wheel

There are two different roulette wheels out there, one being the European wheel. This is the wheel of choice by all gamblers and it should be since the house edge is only 2.7% instead of the 5.26% that is held on the American style wheel.

The house edge is changed by the lack of one key number. The 00 zero was an added feature when the game was modified to fit the standards of the Vegas casinos. This was a disappointment among players with the odds dropping in their favor.

American Roulette Wheel

American Roulette Wheel

In American roulette the wheel consists of 38 numbers, 0, 00, and 1 through 36. Looking around the wheel you will notice the numbers alternating between black/read and from odd to even. All of this has a purpose and that is to make the wheel as random as possible. The casinos make sure of this as they are constantly checking the wheel to be balanced and without any flaws.

As I have mentioned above the American roulette wheel has an extra number, and this gives the house an edge of 5.26%, which is up from the 2.7% advantage in the European roulette wheel.

Don't let the slight wheel advantage get you down though; this game is great no matter what wheel you play. If you are interested in learning more about the things you will be interacting with while play and I am sure you are, you should check out the table layout. You can never be too prepared for something and why not go into the game knowing all you can?
